Under 11 boys football vs Bothal (A)

25th April 2015

By Mr Jones

The ever improving under 11 boys football team managed to make the league play offs after a good run of results in the league, culminating in a narrow and exciting 2-1 victory against Newminster last Thursday, to clinch the runners up spot in League B. For our efforts, we qualified for the league playoff semi-final, against the winner of League A.

We made the journey north to Bothal for an unusual Friday evening fixture, which promised to be our sternest test of the season given Bothal’s results this season. We started with the same team as last week, with Aaron returning to the squad after a knee injury.

Bothal came at us from the whistle and we knew we were in for a tough test. They had a good balance of skill and strength, moving the ball quickly and purposefully. We found ourselves 4-0 down within ten minutes and the yellows were shell shocked. Despite showing some negative body language for a period of the game, we dusted ourselves off and began to get into the game. Lewis managed to grab a goal back with a typical fast break and clean finish.

We began the second half 5-1 down but all hope was not lost as the Coates lads rolled up their sleeves and gave things a shot. We did play noticeably better in the second half, giving Bothal less time on the ball and playing some pretty football of our own. Lewis’ pressure on their defence led to an own goal. 5-2 and there was a bit of belief within the camp. But they managed to grab another few goals to finish the game 7-2.

We wish Bothal and Ponteland good luck in the final next week. Overall we have had a good season and it was shame we left ourselves with too much to do after a poor opening 10 minutes. Pupils will vote next week for their choice of ‘Players’ Player Award’ and there will be a short presentation in assembly on Friday.
