Under 11 boys football vs Wellfield (H)
27th October 2014
By Mr Jones
After a strong start to the league campaign, the under 11 boys football team were drawn against Wellfield in the County Cup; an unknown outfit from North Tyneside. In our favour, we were to play the game on our spectacular new 9a side pitch, dubbed St Jones’ Park.
The oranges arrived a little later than expected, perhaps leaving the Coates lads unsettled before the big game got underway. Nevertheless we started the game and it was Wellfield who set the bar. They were a strong team with several players playing who are members of the Newcastle Academy. They were 1-0 within 30 seconds with a strong finish against stand-in keeper Carl, who kindly offered to play in goal (without gloves!) as Jay was unavailable. Ryan was another player who did the yellows a favour, with skipper Seb being side lined following suspected ankle damage in a fierce weekend encounter. The first half was back and forth but it was Wellfield who capitalised on a disorganised Coates setup, coming in 5-0 up at half time.
The players appeared quiet and dejected, which I suppose it natural given the score line. The players were invited to forget about the first half and just try to enjoy the rest of the game. Try to play football when possible, and if not try to get the ball out of dangerous areas. To their credit, the yellows rolled up their sleeves and gave things a go. Roan chipped in with an outrageous lob from 20 yards, throwing Coates a lifeline. Gus spent the last 5 minutes up front, as he tried to snatch a send-off goal before his big money transfer to another school. Unfortunately he didn’t score but did work hard. We played the second half with more purpose and, despite losing the game 6-1, we certainly matched the strong team from North Tyneside.
Our last game of this part of the season is against local rivals Ponteland. It is on Wednesday 5th November; a home game, kicking off at 3:30pm.
