Under 11 boys football vs Ponteland (A)

An early evening kick off was in store for the derby of the season, to avoid to usual trouble that can emerge from passionate fans. After very little sleep, due to nerves from such a big occasion, the boys set off for the short walk  to Ponteland Middle School. It was the first experience for some on the new pitch of the multi-million pound stadium which opened last year. The groundsman did a fantastic job preparing the pitch to ensure it was flat and divot free.

It was Ponteland who got things under way with a simple goal after only 30 seconds. It looked as if could be a very one sided contest until Coates settled into their rhythm and regained control of the ball. Joe popped up with a cracking strike on 10 minutes before grabbing his brace on 13 minutes, following some powerful running from Ryan down the right to unselfishly square the ball across the box. Moments later, Ryan was involved again to make it 3-1 after he used his speed and power to zoom down the centre of the pitch and calmly place the ball past a helpless oncoming keeper.

Ponteland were not going to lie down though and soon after the second half got underway, they were back in the game with a solid strike from close range. In the 34th minute the game was tied with a fabulous ping into the top right hand corner. Ponteland were building momentum and managed to nick the lead after overloading our defence. Grady pulled off a few fantastic saves to keep us in the game but we did not quite have enough to get anything from the game.

The final score was 4-3 to Ponteland but the boys can take credit for being 3-1 up and controlling the first half. Ryan stood out as player of the match. We need to work on switching the play and moving the ball a bit quicker when we are playing against strong teams. Next up is Seaton Sluice at home, next Thursday.
